Lying just to the south of Perth City is the atmospheric town of Fremantle. There is still resonance of the maritime and colonial days of old which is reflected in the pretty architecture. Much of the town was built by ex-inmates, used as a hard-working and cheap labour force - the details of which can be found in the museum.
Fremantle has a flourishing mix of boutiques, markets and the well-known Cappuccino Strip where many fine dining restaurants and cafes can be found. Fremantle is also a base from which many tours begin includingn to Rottnest Island, Perth City and Whale Watching tours which leave from the Fremantle harbour.
The America's Cup Yachting trophy is proudly held in the town and the event sees an influx of tourists swoop on Fremantle each year in hope that the trophy will be brought home once again.
